Janet Jackson is an American actress, singer and dancer. She is also known as the pop icon for her prominent contribution towards contemporary music.

Janet Jackson was born on May 16, 1966, in Gary Indiana in the United States. Her full name is Janet Damita Jo Jackson, She was the youngest child in the Jackson family.

Early Career

Jackson family members are raised with Jehovah’s Witnesses faith. Janet Jackson attended public school Encino and she graduated in 1984 from Valley Professional School.

At the age of 7, Jackson first appeared on the stage with her brothers in the Las Vegas Strip. At the age of 9, Janet began acting in a variety show featuring Jackson siblings as entire cast. Janet performance gave her another chance in comedy series Good Times which was aired for two years. Later she appeared in Tv series A New Kind Of Family, Different Strokes and Fame.

Janet Jackson father Joseph Jackson made a contract with A&M Records for Janet debut album when she was sixteen years old. Her debut album Janet Jackson was released in 1982 and It became a huge hit, sold over 250,000 copies. In 1984 Janet released her second album Dream Street.

For her third album, Janet Jackson paired with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis by terminating her father business contracts. Janet third album Control was released in 1986, the album has been sold more than 8 million copies worldwide. The single “When I Think Of You” became her first no 1 at the billboard. The Control album won four American Music Awards and got three Grammy nominations.

In 1989 Janet Jackson released her fourth album “Rhythm Nation 1814”. It was sold over 12 million copies and won three American Music Awards. In 1993 Jackson released her fifth album Janet. The song “That’s the Way Love Goes” won Grammy Award in the category of Best Rhythm and Blues song.

In 1995 Janet worked with her brother, the king of pop Michael Jackson for the “Scream” song for his album HIStory. In 1997 Janet released The Velvet Rope album.

Janet Jackson titled her name for her eighth album Damita Jo and her ninth album 20 Y.O, It was released in 2005.

Jackson released her eleventh studio album Unbreakable in 2015. It was written and co-produced by Janet along with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

Film Career

In 1993 Janet made her debut in the film Poetic Justice. Jackson wrote a song “Again” for the film. The movie turned into a disaster, But the song “Again” won Golden Globe Award and nominated for Academy Award.

In 2000 Janet Jackson acted in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. Jackson played the role of professor Denise Gaines. This film received positive talk and collected around $170 million.

In 2007 Janet appeared in her third film Why Did I Get Married?. She played the role of psychotherapist opposite to Tyler Perry.

In 2010 Janet starred in For Colored Girls film, The film story is adapted from Ntozake Shange’s play. Jackson performance received positive reviews and she got nominated for Black Reel Awards.

Apart from music and filming Janet Jackson was a philanthropist, she helped to raise funds for many charities. Janet wrote a book True You: A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself which is about her struggles in her career, personal life and health.
