Steve Smith is an international cricketer and former captain of the Australian team. Smith is top ranking test batsmen at present, who reached second highest test batting rating of all time. Steve Smith was born on 2 June 1989 in Kogarah of Sydney. His full name is Steven Peter Devereux Smith. Steve went to Menai High School and he left the school at the age of 17 to pursue cricket as a career.

After dropping out from the school, Smith went to England where he played club cricket for Sevenoaks Vine. Smith started his career as a right arm leg spinner. He used to bat at no 7 or 8th. Over the career, Smith emerged as a top batsman from the part-time leg spinner.

Career

In 2008 Smith played his debut first-class cricket for New South Wales. Smith was the part of New South Wales team which was won the T20 Champions League in 2009.

In 2008 Smith played his debut T20 in Big Bash League representing New South Wales team. He became leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 9 wickets. By his remarkable performance in Big Bash League, Smith earned a chance to play IPL (Indian Premier League). In the first season, he played for Pune Warriors and now he is playing for Rajasthan Royals.

In 2010 Smith played his debut international ODI match against West Indies. Smith was selected into the 2010 T20 world cup team, He took 11 wickets in 7 matches and he became second highest wicket-taker of the tournament.

Smith played his first test match against Pakistan in 2010 which was held in Lords. In the first match, he took 3 wickets and in the Second test match he took zero wickets, But he played impressive innings with the bat by scoring 77 runs. Smith played his next test match in Ashes 2010 series.

Smith was in super form in 2015 world cup. Smith played a significant role and helped Australia to lift the world cup. He scored 402 runs with a century and four half-centuries.

In 2015 Australian captain Michael Clark announced his retirement after losing Ashes series against England. The Cricket Australia appointed Smith as captain and David Warner as vice-captain.

In 2015 Smith scored four consecutive centuries in four test matches in a series against India. The same year Steve Smith has been ranked no 1 ICC Test batsmen.

Controversy

In a test match against South Africa, Australian player Cameron Bancroft was caught on camera while rubbing the ball with yellow color sandpaper. After rubbing the ball he hid the object in his underwear. The whole incident was caught on cameras. Following the day the ball tampering issue has been raised at the press conference. Smith accepted they have used the object to change the ball direction and he also accepted that he knew the plan in advance.

Following the Incident Cricket Australia did an investigation and they found that David Warner made the plan and Bancroft implemented it. Smith knew the Warner plan which was discussed in the lunch break, but he hasn’t stopped anyone.

Cricket Australia banned Warner, Smith for one year and 9 months for Bancroft from International and domestic Cricket. After this incident, BCCI also banned Warner and Steven Smith from the IPL
